Lodz Stadium

U20WC 2019: Lodz stadium

Opened in March 2017, Stadion Widzewa has a capacity of 18,018 and is a modern sporting arena with all four stands offering fans protection from the elements. The stadium is home to Widzew Łodz, one of Poland’s most recognisable clubs with a history spanning back more than a hundred years and with countless victories on the European stage to their name. Players such as Zbigniew Boniek, Włodzimierz Smolarek, Jozef Młynarczyk and Marek Citko have all graced the club in years gone by. Some of the club’s biggest successes include reaching the semi-final of the European Cup in 1983 and participating in the 1996 UEFA Champions League. The current team plays in Poland’s third tier, II liga, but this does not stop the from club setting records for season ticket sales year after year and recording the second-best attendance figures in Poland.

The stadium plays host to other sporting and cultural events, including rugby and American football games, as well as concerts. The U-20 Poland national football team and the Polish national rugby team regularly play matches here, too. The north stand can also be disassembled to allow for a stage to be put in its place.
